(More customer reviews)This Knapford station set is excellent - includes many phrases and recognizes engines with the gold lettering underneath and gold couplings. It is part of the Talking Railway series, in which set pieces talk when Talking Railway engines go by them. If an engine with the silver letting (non Talking Railway) passes through, the station will give one of several more generic phrases such as, "keep on schedule, stay on the tracks" or railroad sounds. The voice box is in the station and not the engines - it's Sir Topham Hat doing the talking and sometimes the characters (James says, "I am a red engine #5"). Note that the station will greet ANY train with a magnet - including Brio or other Thomas compatible trains. They will get a generic greeting rather than a personalized one. But there are so many phrases, kids love it.
One of the more useful additions with this set is a hi-lo volume button - great if you have company over or use the set near a TV or work area. This also works well on both hardwood floors and carpeted floors. Also useful is that the station is in separate pieces - so if you are pressed for room, you can use one part of the station (the one with the red sensor track/RIFD that 'reads' the engines) instead of needing the whole unit side by side.
There is a door in the station, and if the door is closed, you get generic railroad sounds. If open, you get phrases.
Most of the set is wood and includes many unusual pieces, including bumpers, short curves, forks, and even a conductor and two railroad signs. As such, this is a GREAT starter set as a gift for a toddler. You don't need any other parts or pieces.
In all, highly recommended.
