(More customer reviews)It looked so nice in the picture and being wood, made it seem even nicer. It has never worked right. The clamp/grabber part can't hold onto anything so my son cannot collect any object, no matter how light, with the crane and lift it around. Also, the crane came in 3 sections which were very easy to assemble, but never stays together either. After reassembling it over an over again, I finally duct taped it so it would stay together. So this crane doesn't pick up anything, nor does it stay together.

Rolling Gantry Crane - NEW Review

(More customer reviews)My grandson (age 2-3/4) is a total Thomas fan and especially loves the cranes. This was a recent purchase and he was so excited that he got up by himself in the morning and his dad heard him playing with it before anyone was up.
He has had it less than 2 weeks and the cord that allows the magnet to go up and down has come loose from the insides and we have had to just tie it on (no longer goes up and down). We're about to take the crane apart (there are obvious Phillips head screws) and hope we can re-tie the cord.
This is the first of many Thomas series that has had a problem, but since it's quite a bit more expensive than trains, I hope we can fix it. I also plan to to to Learning Center's web site and see if there is a Customer Help area for advice.

(More customer reviews)This is my son's favorite fire truck, and he knows a good fire truck when he sees one. It has held up AMAZINGLY to the rough and tumble play of a three year old. The ladder extends and retracts, the hose actually can shoot water, should you choose to show your child. Unfortunately my son figured it himself and has extinguished many a "fires" throughout our home. Worth the money.

LEGO TECHNIC Log Loader (8049) Review

(More customer reviews)Normally I wouldn't give five stars to a tractor and trailer, but this set marks the return of the much beloved Lego pneumatics. Those cylinders operating the log-grabber are attached to hoses that lead from a pump underneath the trailer. You operate the pump with your finger and use valves to control the air to the pistons. Don't expect miracles from the pneumatic system; the pistons do not have a long throw and the grabber is not going to lift heavy weights. But it is fun and I think quite educational for the kids. For children, turning the spaghetti of pneumatic plumbing into a working artifact is a revelation. In fact, this set is probably more valuable for its creative possibilities in building different machines than it is as a log lifter. If you enjoy building machines with your kids, I recommend this set highly. The tractor is rather compact and spartan, but the kids have an easy time maneuvering it. And the trailer with the pneumatic log lifter is like a big robotic claw for them. The finger pump and the valves are not the easiest devices for some children to manipulate (i.e., age six or younger). You can purchase an accessory motor set (Lego 8293) to power the pump, however, and I recommend lengthening the valve levers so that little fingers have an easier time with them.
Update (January 2011): Lego delisted this set at the end of 2010. As the set becomes scarce, prices will become unreasonable. However, Lego has a big pneumatics set planned for latter 2011. Lego 8110 is a Unimog U400 with a pneumatic grabber; the early pictures suggest it is going to be a beautiful set, but expensive. Still, this appears to confirm that Lego sees a modest market for pneumatic technic sets.

Bruder CATERPILLAR Skid Steer Loader Review

(More customer reviews)My son fell in love with the Bruder trucks at the toy store when he was 2 years old. The skid-steer loader was the first one we got for him, and he's been happily playing with it for about a year and a half at this point. We chose it in part because it was smaller than some of the others and a better size for him at the time.
My son is not at all gentle on his trucks: he expects them to work and work hard. This little loader has gone through gravel, sandpiles, mulch and macaroni in its time, and it's still in great shape. We just give it a rinse when it gets too dirty to come back inside. The mechanism which allows the arm to remain raised in the air has worn slightly and slips if there is any weight in the bucket (probably from sand getting into it); beyond that it has worn very well indeed.
We have since purchased a number of other Bruder trucks for our son and they are among his favorite toys.
