First I will say I am new to model railroading. That being said I am a network and broadcasting engineer. I started with a junky Bachmann set around $55 and kinda caught the fever you could say. After building a layout and purchasing much of others peoples junk off of ebay I bought the Athearn GP38-2 Union Pacific #625 new. Im not doing DCC at this time and am powering the layout with a Tech4 power supply. The train runs and sounds smooth and very low speeds. It even pulls well but slow, up my newbie designed abusive 5% grade...yeah I dont know what I was thinking. However I bought a another twin to this one and together they march right up this. It works well with the momentum feature and doesnt act jerky. I dont really care for the crew-fryer light...I guess at this price level they dont care too much about that. The detail is okay and the hand rails on the newer ones add alot. For the money and compared to the 'toy' garbage thats out there I guess I would say its an entry level BMW....but its still a BMW. If your new to HO railroading like me and dont really have a real engine, this is a great locomotive to start with. I sure Ill still be using them for something in 5 years.
