(More customer reviews)the bridge itself is pretty sturdy. didn't have and problems with the gate at the end of the bridge. the cranking mechanism used to raise and lower bridge is a bit on the weak side which is not good for younger and/or impatient kids. my 2 year old wants to just grab the bridge itself and pull it up and down. I ended up detaching the two arms that connect the bridge to the crank mechanism (two tiny screws can be removed) to make the bridge "manually" operated by just pulling it up and down. I used a piece of the wire from the packaging to lash the top ends of the arms to the stationary structure of the bridge so they won't be damaged. when he's a bit older and understands how to not force/break things I will re-attached the arms.
otherwise the bridge is VERY cool. I bought it for my son's wooden railroad system because the design reminded me so much of the old iron bridges we have in downtown Chicago!
