The bottom and split track are all wood and really well made. The shed's sides, top and back are pretty close to the same MDF that the Thomas Christmas tunnel sides are made out of (we just got that--and that's what I have to compare) My 15 month old has thumped it, bumped it, thrown it, dropped it and it's still looking fresh out of the box. The rest of our thomas, brio and melissa and doug track fits it pretty well and it's pretty nice. It does only fit small engines lengthwise (it is a small engine shed after all) like Thomas, Percy, or the narrow gauge engines like Victor. Hiro's head is left out in the cold when he's parked in the shed even without his tender. The shed is a little too short for the toddler versions of Thomas and Percy (but then the Thomas Christmas tunnel is too short for them, too) The brio squiddo/frogster trains fit perfectly (I think they're frogs and fish)
Defintely recommend over the more expensive if you're not sure if the Thomas obsession will stick with your child.
