(More customer reviews)All Thomas trains are wonderful learning tools for young kids. My son has been an enthusiastic "engineer" starting at age 2 to the present age of 7. From watching the Thomas videos, kids build their vocabulary and storytelling skills, as well as their track-building skills (spatial relationships, shapes, bridges, engineering), which can be directed to an enthusiastic interest in reading and math.
For parents purchasing the wooden Bronze Diesel in particular, because it's a retired, hard-to-find train, there appear to be some knock-offs manufactured outside the country, to which you need to be concerned: the one we recently ordered via Amazon, most likely through no fault of the buyer, resembled funky-looking internationally sold trains shown on eBay (bronze coloring of body and wheels didn't match photos on toy sites, and train body details looked "off", with sloppy lines for windows). The one we purchased via Amazon had chipped metal paint in between the plastic and cardboard box -- quite unusual for a new train. From calling Learning Curve, they told me that their number (look for "LC" and an item number) on the back of the box didn't match Bronze Diesel's packaging. Avoiding any lead or toxic paints used is something to be especially careful about, as this was a concern several years ago with a few recalled trains. Use your best judgment in examining the product and its container so our little ones' toys remain safe. This was the first time we've ever had a need to be concerned about a train, and we have 100 daily-loved trains.
Overall, our family continues to encourage our son's enthusiasm for the Thomas the Tank Engine products.
