We were very excited to find a little affordable motorized engine for my son who is a BIG train lover. He has lots of wooden trains and spends lots of time playing with them. We thought this would really get him excited and we were right -- right out of the box, he tossed aside all other toys from Christmas and was begging us to get it out of the package!
Unfortunately, the switch to turn it on/off and forward/reverse are all in one and to turn it OFF, you have to slide this little bar exactly halfway in (right in the middle) from left to right. It is located just behind and above the back wheel, and is a little plastic bar that you slide right or left to make it go forward or back. The middle is stop/off...which for a 2-3 yr old is a very hard task to accomplish given the lack of very fine motor skills... So that was VERY frustrating for him and for us...because we always found it running, lying on the floor or stuck on his track, wheels still churning away, burning up the batteries.
We put in rechargables right away, but after only one day's use, they're toast and in the charger again. Wouldn't be a big deal if it was a simple "snap it open and pull out the batteries", but you have to unscrew the compartment to get to them, requiring a precision phillips head screwdriver. Annoying, especially when you ahve to do it this often!
So, if you are looking for something affordable and don't care so much about your kid mastering the goofy switch, this is a decent little train and has held up well. It will pull about 3 wooden normal sized train cars up a hill or two, but anything more than that is really grinds to get it up or just doesn't do it at all. My son is your typical engineer, and well let's face it... MALE... and puts on the FULL LOAD of cars and gets upset when it won't pull it up the hill!
The rubber tread on the front and back wheels is very thin and I don't know how long that will last with it spinning its wheels now and then trying to chug up the hills. Once that is gone, the poor thing will be useless on hills!
So it's a toss up. Spend a little more money and buy something hopefully better quality and easier to use -- or go with the cheaper one and just deal with the small annoyances.
Bottom line -- GET GOOD RECHARGABLE BATTERIES!!!

Sometimes watching a train go by is even more fun than driving the train! This battery-powered locomotive can haul trains all around your track and up and over bridges. Push the yellow button on top to hear the train blow its whistle, chug out of the station, clang its bell and then speed away. The switch on the side makes the locomotive go forward, reverse or stop. Comes with two button-cell batteries for sound. Requires one "AAA" battery for motion (not included). Includes 1 battery-powered red locomotive.
