This car and all metal train products are better in my opinion, the most train set qulity sets or cars. I like to start with the pros, the mass weight, most the weight is too much, ya if you are going by NMRA standerds, but the weight to me gives the car a more realistic feel. By that I mean you give your locos a run for the money, lots of weight gives you that real train feel. Another pro with car is with this heavy weight you can do real kicking with out much force. Model Power has also produced this car with grade A RP-25 metal weels, wich roll great. Watch out though, if you set this car out on a slight grade it will roll, yes even if there is more then one. Down they go.... it is just like when you bleed-off the real thing. Now on to the paint sceme, another grade A, My cars out of the box are like proto 2000 in compairison with the paint.
Now, onto the cons, we will start with the molding style of the car, Model Power it seems did not do as good as they could have done. The qulity of the body is equal to proto 1000, the grab irons do not stick out, and the sterups are plastic NOT metal, the laders and sills are molded into the side of the car. This poor qulity mistake will be pasted up by the "proto-type" modeler, what a shame. That is why I can only give this, or any Model Power Metal Train series, a 4 star rateing. A easy con is the plastic knuckle cuplers, they give to much slack. Easly fixable with Kadee #5 or #58 what ever you like better.
Now to bring it all together, this car is good and you got to give em' credit. For most will be happy with these cars. Good qulity at a good price and with todays prices in freight cars $12.00-$15.00 is not too bad for what you get. Enjoy your new car, hope I was of some help.
p.s. Because of the mass weight as in the text above the Metal Train series is best on metal type track (nickel silver) Atlas Snap switches with plastic frogs will be destroyed with regular use of these cars. Stay with the metal frogs or use Peco track. These cars will also hammer code 40 track, so beware of where they are going to, beleave me, I know from experience.
