Pocket CT-ART Review
Average Reviews:
(More customer reviews)A friend from an Internet e-list and I purchased this at about the same time. We both own CT-Art for the desktop and love it. The version for the pocket PC, however, has some errors that I consider serious from the point of view of a serious chess student. The first is that the program does not allow for alternate successful moves or variations as the PC version does. In the PC version if you select a move that has the same or similar effect you are told "That's correct, but let's consider a similar move." You then still receive the points for a correct answer. But in the Pocket PC version you are penalized even though the alternate move is given in the notes given in the annotation window. Another problem is in the navigation. You must select in the "filter" menu that you wish to solve only the "new" problems or you will be sent back to the beginning of the section each time you reload the program. There is no way to select a specific exercise or jump ahead without manually clicking through each one.
Despite these problems, which need to be fixed in the next version, there is at least one nice feature that I enjoy that cannot be found in the PC version: you can switch languages. I have been learning Russian and like the fact that I can change to Russian without having to reinstall the game and then if I want to go back to English I can do that easily as well.
Although the Pocket PC has problems I still give it 4 stars for two key reasons:
* The quality of the exercises. These are the same, high quality problems - many based on real games - that are found in the PC version.
* Convenience. The importance of convenience in improving at anything is immense. Now I can do my tactics drills any where I go, even shopping with my girlfriend! Now I have no excuse not to do 20 per day.
