This might be the only Lego train that I would consider giving three stars. I picked this up at a garage sale last year and when I got it put together, I decided that it needed an immediate rebuild as an entirely different train. Your mileage may vary, and kids are going to go nuts over any kind of train, but I did not like the design. The engine is this odd little wedge that uses a custom base. The cars have ugly blue tinted windows with large flip up sides. The cars themselves are far too long, something that looks very wrong as the train rounds a curve (much of the car stretches over the trackside). In the set's defense, I do like the emphasis on a train that can be loaded and unloaded (see, for example some of the newer passenger trains that lack doors entirely!). Perhaps I'm too conventional, but with a small amount of your own Lego pieces, you can turn this into a much more attractive design.
I should mention that this set comes from the 9 volt era of Lego trains. 9 volt runs on electrified track. Lego discontinued the system in 2007; motors and metal covered track have become increasingly scarce. The new "Power Function" trains use the same gauge track but they employ infrared remote control and battery-powered engines.
Cheers
