(More customer reviews)This kit is very user friendly and very child friendly. We mixed the papier mache and had the volcano made in under 5 minutes. It dried within 2 days and the "explosion" went off without a hitch. There is a nice information booklet, too. It's all good but I don't think worth the price. The lava foams and creeps over the side. Nothing dramatic (like the mentos in a bottle of pop experiment which is 10 feet high and must be done outside) but still good.
You could make your own papier mache, and use a rounded tsp. baking powder and pour in enough vinegar for it to foam up and over the edge, get volcano info on line and spend next to nothing.
But if you're looking to give a gift in a nice box with slick pictures, then it's fine. If you just want to make a volcano for a science project, I'd say save your money and do your own. The only piece you'd need to find is some sort of vial that's cylindrical and open at the top to put the baking powder in.
