We purchased Talking Thomas, Talking Percy, and Talking James a YEAR ago and they are still going STRONG. I truly don't understand the numerous bad reviews- AND I am so glad I didn't see the reviews before buying (glad it didn't affect my buying decision). Yes, we had to replace the batteries within a week of our initial purchase- the batteries included are for store demonstration purposes- so they were fairly drained. I did worry about how often we would have to replace the batteries since they require the costly button cell batteries- BUT to my surprise once we replaced them, they lasted a VERY long time- they lasted about 6 months before they had to be replaced again!
We have not had any functionality problems with any of the Thomas Talking vehicles. My son received them for his 2nd b-day and has HEAVILY played with them everyday for a year- and he is very rough on his trains (they have been thrown, dropped, stepped on, and through countless very hard "train crashes"- you name it). If you have a Thomas fan, please don't let the negative reviews cause any hesitation in buying- these are great quality trains and they are more fun than the non-talking ones. My son pointed out right away that these trains were special since they had buttons and made sounds and his other trains didn't. I just wish that ALL the characters were available with the talking option!
