(More customer reviews)The Kato Burlington Route F3A is a fine model of the motive power of the classic streamliner, The California Zephyr. The Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad (The Burlington Route) bought three A-B-A sets of F3 locomotives painted bright silver to pull the California Zephyr from Chicago to Denver where they handed it off to the D&RGW.
The paint is opaque (the plastic does not show through) and the lettering is crisp, clear, and readable without blurry edges. The model has a DCC friendly mechanism with dual flywheels and which power all eight wheels. There are no traction tires, which allows for good electrical pick-up, but has sufficient weight so that pulling power is not diminished. The model has LED directional headlights (headlight lights up for direction of travel) and lighted number boards. This is a "drop in" DCC capable with Digitrax DN163K0B or TCS K0D8 decoders.
I really like mine. They are excellent runners and fairly quiet running. A check with the coupler gauge shows the couplers to be the correct height and while I wasn't able to check the wheel gauge, I had no problems during operation. They pull excellently and an A-B-A set of Kato F3s has no problems pulling the Kato California Zephyr model, even on grades. I recommend this model highly as an excellent N scale representation of an early EMD cowl unit and a classic model of the age of Streamliners.
