(More customer reviews)I bought this toy today and set it up when we got home (30 minutes, no tools but for sure an adult job, maybe a much older sibling. I have a few other track sets to the Take along Thomas (TaT) already as well as a bunch of the wooden train track.
My feelings about the TaT track we already owned is that the line seems sort of flimsy. I wasn't expecting much, especially for forty bucks. Was I pleasantly surprised! The spiral tower, which is the big draw in this set, fits together so much sturdier than the regular track. The track for the spiral is different than the grey flat stuff; there are sides and it is much stiffer. It fits together differently as well but the whole thing transitions at ground level to fit to the regular TaT track. Now we might be in trouble if we lose the special ascending track piece that connects the tower with the flat track (it's different than a standard ascending track piece). In addition to the very cool, very sturdy spiral tower, the set comes with enough grey plastic track pieces to make a nice little layout, including a couple of "turnouts to nowhere" where you could hook up other playsets or other loops of track. I didn't have any turnouts before so that is a nice plus. Also, right after the flat track starts and begins to curve, there is a very handy guard rail that keeps the trains from careening off the track after they've zoomed down the mine shaft spiral. Very handy. There are cardboard inserts to stick in the seam between the track and the guard rails; the scenes are cute but the cutouts themselves are just in the way and we'll probably take them down and toss them out. Funny...in the display picture online the cutouts make it look as though there is a bridge and some more track or something; it's just a picture!
The directions and illustrations for assmebly are well done; there are a lot of parts but each one is clearly labeled so there's no confusion as to "is this track piece B or track piece C?"
My son (age 3) has had a ton of fun sending his trains down the spiraling mine; I would buy the item again.
