(More customer reviews)We have a number of N-scale engines from various manufacturers and KATO is definitely our top choice. We have this C44-9W in Norfolk Southern and it runs great. It rides very smooth and pretty quiet, and can go very slow. However it can pull quite a few cars and does pretty well on hills. It has nice directional headlights and dynamic breaks. Ours came with Micro Trains' magnetic couplers on both ends. It has a lot of nice and fine detail as just about any other good N-scale engine. Ours is straight DC, but could just as easily be outfitted with a DCC decoder. KATO stands for quality and it is difficult to go wrong with their engines. However, it is also KATO's goal to be affordable. So most of their engines are comparable or cheaper than other manufacturers' models, yet KATO has a better quality. I definitely recommend this one.
