I purchased it for my 2-year-old grandson. the magnetic pencil is on a very short string and the magnetic balls are really small. He was not able to work it with confidence, even after many, many tries. I don't recommend this for a small child. It seems to me more of a car toy for a bored 1-3rd grader.
